The Stellar S2015: Form, Function, and Flexibility

The Stellar S2015: Form, Function, and Flexibility

At the heart of these projects is the Stellar S2015 modular building, expertly customised to meet the specific needs of the Council and local community. Built to replace ageing infrastructure, the Stellar S2015 offers a sleek, durable design that is both easy to maintain and highly adaptable.

The units feature accessible toilets, unisex cubicles, and modern internal finishes designed for longevity and ease of use. Importantly, these buildings incorporate sustainability at every step—from water-saving fixtures to energy-efficient lighting.

Art as a Beacon: Enhancing Safety and Awareness

A standout feature of these new amenities is the artistic integration into the building’s exterior. In line with Manningham’s broader vision to activate public spaces and improve perceptions of safety, both sites include custom-designed, backlit perforated aluminium panels. These artworks, which glow subtly after dark, not only enhance the visual appeal of the buildings but also help eliminate dark corners and clearly mark the location of the facilities in low-light conditions.

This initiative exemplifies how public infrastructure can serve dual purposes—delivering essential services while contributing positively to the visual and social fabric of the community.

Collaborative and Creative Design Process

The journey from concept to completion was a deeply collaborative one. Stakeholders across council departments, contractors, and design teams engaged in a thorough workshop process to ensure the finished product met both aesthetic and practical goals. Three design options were initially developed and evaluated, followed by the production of full-size printed and backlit prototypes before final installation.
This careful, phased approach reflects the Council’s commitment to quality, safety, and community engagement, while also showcasing the design and fabrication excellence of Stellar Washrooms.

Working Smart in Tight Urban Spaces

Executing projects in busy shopping precincts posed logistical challenges, particularly given the confined conditions of district carparks and the need to minimise disruption to businesses and shoppers. Despite tight timelines and spatial constraints, the buildings were delivered on schedule, thanks to the efficiencies of modular construction and careful project coordination.

The Jackson Court and Tunstall Square projects set a new standard for public toilets in urban settings—combining art, accessibility, safety, and sustainable design in compact, user-friendly spaces. With community needs at the centre of the design process, these facilities represent a model that other municipalities may look to replicate.

Manningham City Council continues to demonstrate that even the most utilitarian of public services can be delivered with innovation, beauty, and community impact in mind
